We all know that recently the Department of Home Affairs has introduced the new “Smart ID Card” that is supposed to replace the standard ID booklet. In an attempt to streamline the transition, the Department of Home Affairs has introduced a project that will allow customers to walk into their nearest bank and apply for their Smart ID Cards.

The project was initially announced in February and was expected to implement as earlier than the end of September. The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba will be launching the pilot project on 30 September 2015 that is aimed at ensuring convenient and easy access to the application of the Smart ID Card.

This is good news for everyone who can't afford to spend an entire day waiting in a queue at the Department of home Affairs offices. Currently Standard bank and FNB is participating in this project with Nedbank expected to join as early as beginning of November. Absa will be participating in the roll-out of Smart ID Cards. Capitec will not be participating in this project and has not announced any intentions of joining in the near future.

This is indeed a great initiative made by the Department of Home Affairs, let's hope that the projects grows and extends to include other services such as Passport applications, Unabridged Birth Certificates, Visas etc.
